What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can strike out of nowhere, turning a good day into a stressful one in the blink of an eye. Knowing how to respond can make a world of difference in saving your smile and reducing pain. Here are some practical tips on what to do during a dental emergency, brought to you by Blue Valley Smiles in Overland Park, KS.

Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them

Toothache: That nagging tooth pain can be more than just an annoyance—it could signal a serious problem. Start by rinsing your mouth with warm water, floss gently to remove any trapped food, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Whatever you do, resist the urge to place aspirin directly on your tooth or gum—it can cause burns!

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Oops! Whether it’s from biting down on something hard or a sudden accident, save any pieces of the tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling. Then, call your dentist immediately. The sooner you get professional help, the better.

Knocked-Out Tooth: Time is of the essence. Hold the tooth by the crown (the part you chew with), rinse it gently without removing any attached tissue, and try to place it back in its socket as soon as possible. If that’s too tricky, store the tooth in milk or saline solution and head straight to your dentist. Time is crucial here—the best chance to save the tooth is within an hour.

Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown falls out, you can use temporary dental cement (available at most drugstores), petroleum jelly, or sugarless gum to temporarily reattach it or cover the tooth. Do not use super glue. Avoid chewing on that side and contact your dentist to get it fixed ASAP.

Abscess: An abscess is a serious infection and needs immediate attention. If you spot a painful, pimple-like swelling on your gum, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution several times a day to ease the pain and draw out the infection. Then, make a beeline to your dentist—abscesses can spread if left untreated.

When to Seek Professional Help

While these tips can help you manage the situation temporarily, it’s crucial to seek professional dental care for any emergency. Prompt treatment not only relieves pain but can also prevent further complications.
