How to Handle a Broken or Knocked-Out Tooth

September 7, 2024
dental emergencies, broken tooth, knocked-out tooth, emergency dental care, tooth trauma, tooth fracture, Overland Park dentist

Dental emergencies can be stressful, but knowing what to do when a tooth breaks or gets knocked out can save your smile. Whether it’s a minor chip or a completely dislodged tooth, fast action is key. Here’s how you should handle a broken or knocked-out tooth to minimize damage and ensure the best possible outcome.

Handling a Broken Tooth

A broken or chipped tooth may not seem like a big deal, but it’s important to seek dental care as soon as possible to avoid further damage or infection.

    1. Rinse Your Mouth

Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and remove any debris.

    2. Apply a Cold Compress

If the break caused pain or swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 10-15 minutes at a time.

    3. Save Any Broken Pieces

If possible, save any pieces of the tooth that have broken off and store them in a clean container. Your dentist may be able to reattach them.

    4. Contact Your Dentist

Call your dentist right away to schedule an emergency visit. Even if the damage seems minor, it’s essential to get the tooth examined.

Handling a Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth has been completely knocked out, time is of the essence. Quick action can increase the chances of saving the tooth.

    1. Pick Up the Tooth Carefully

Hold the tooth by the crown (the part you can normally see), not the root. Avoid touching or scrubbing the root to prevent further damage.

    2. Rinse the Tooth Gently

If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly with water. Don’t use soap or chemicals, and avoid drying the tooth or wrapping it in tissue.

    3. Try to Reinsert the Tooth

If possible, gently place the tooth back into its socket and hold it in place. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva to keep it moist.

    4. Get to the Dentist ASAP

Call your dentist immediately and head to the office. The sooner you receive care, the better the chances of saving the tooth.
